The latest trend to end any “groggy” feelings is to detox, but do you really need one?
People that are conscientious about food intake and who live in pollution free environments, control their weight, exercise regularly, and have good health habits may be excluded; but for the rest of us, it’s probably a good practice.
I recently spent a weekend on the road visiting relatives consuming a lot of fast food meals. It took a couple of days to recover from the Pizza Ranch experience alone, getting my body restored to my normal salad and plant-based food diet to straighten everything out again.
It is important to cleanse the body to eliminate toxins residing in the liver, kidneys, colon, lungs, skin, and lymphatic system. Harmful toxins come from the food we eat, the environment around us, personal care products, and stressful situations including negative thinking.
Internal cleansing of the body helps fight known cancer-causing agents. It releases toxic chemicals, pesticides, and plastics that are stored in fat cells, then flushed out by defecation and urination.
Choosing whole organic plant-based foods makes a huge difference and internal organs will thank you for feeding them properly. Control your intake of wheat-based bread, processed foods, crunchy snacks, sugar, gluten, yogurt, cheese, and soda. Eat more fruits and vegetables throughout the day and you may not need to spend too much time in detox mode.
But why is this important?
The benefits of detoxing the body include improved immune systems, weight loss management, energy boost, cleaner breath, smoother skin, sharper mental concentration, and healthy hair. You become calm and symbiotic with your gut and other organs.f
For example, I tried an organic Detox tea the other evening. The ingredients listed on the small packet (all organic) include Indian Sarsaparilla Root, Cinnamon Bark, Ginger Root, Licorice Root, Burdock Root, Dandelion Root, Cardamom Pad, Clove Bud, Black Pepper, Juniper Berry Extract, Long Pepper Berry, Rhubarb Root, Chinese Skullcap Root, Coptic Root, Forsythia Fruit, Gardenia Fruit, and Japanese Honeysuckle Flower.
This healthy cleansing formula helped calm me, allowing greater awareness of my body after having a couple of cups. Herbal recipe teas or tisanes are gradually finding places in my diet now throughout the day, in most cases replacing coffee.
Natural design function of the human body excretes toxins and waste products without assistance. But now humans are exposed to chemicals and pesticides at rates that overload internal organs. These toxins reside in the liver trapping fat cells. When the body goes through a detoxification process, the organs (liver, kidney, colon, lungs, skin and lymphatic system) release toxic compounds and get rested so they can begin to function normally again. Your body responds in a positive way with regular pain-free bowel movements and your mind regains awareness of internal organs functioning properly.
Another simple detox that my wife and I have been drinking in the morning before breakfast or that first cup of coffee is the lemon mix. Take half a lemon and squeeze the juice and pulp into a cup. Add some shaved ginger root and fill the cup with hot water. Add a pinch of Cayenne Pepper, a swig of maple syrup, and stir.
(Sipping this can be an intense experience, so be careful with the amount of Cayenne Pepper!)
It clears your sinuses, throat, and lungs in quick order. Your breath will be clean before brushing teeth. Practicing these habits weekly will strengthen your immune system keeping you free from disease, building a defense against all those people who bring coughs, colds, and flu to the office to spread around.
When you commit to a detox period of 2-3 days you are going to want to set aside a stay at home weekend to be ready for any adverse reaction your body may experience. It’s not fun, you will get bored, your body will smell, and it can be emotional. Cleansing the colon usually requires trips to the bathroom and you want to be prepared for some emergency situations that might be unexpected.
For example, when exercising, I recommend simply walking around the block several times so that you are never too far away from your home bathroom should the need arise, if you get my drift.
If you implement a 3-day detoxification program, you will be thinking about food a lot. Food that you have chosen not to eat during this interval. Your mind may even go into a dream state thinking and assessing all the types of food that you have eaten in the past. Fasting periods, although physically challenging, almost always produce positive results for mind and body when the regimen is over. These thoughts are normal so be assured they will pass, and you will feel better at the end of the process.
I’ve mentioned some methods to implement a detox regimen; try the lemon mix or a Detox Tea for starters. Detoxification methods are highly personal administered by yourself, so there are hundreds of variations to put in place.
Just be wary of expensive advertised programs that promote all liquid diets and skipping meals for quick weight loss promises; there are plenty of negative reviews for these products.
Instead, embrace detox methods as part of your lifestyle.
If you’re unsure of where to start and want an easy fix, a great product we recommend often is the Red Tea Detox. It has a lot of great reviews, along with realistic “before and after” type photos and case studies. You can check it out for yourself and see if it’s right for you here.
Take the time to put yourself through a self-administered detox for internal organ cleansing and tell us about the results!
